This week, ASCAP announced an unexpected partnership with one of the most controversial platforms in the modern music industry, LANDR. Along with the announcement comes backlash from many audio professionals who derive at least a portion of their income from mastering services.
 
While many are seeing this partnership as a money grab by ASCAP through some type of profit-sharing deal, it might just be the start of a new wave of thinking in an industry desperate for a new business model. This could very well be the beginning of artificial intelligence and machine learning affecting the music industry’s approach to production.

LinkedIn has long been the leading name in professional social networking, but has struggled for years bringing a younger audience into the mix. With just 15% of users under 30 years old, millennial are vastly under-represented on the platform. By redesigning the look and feel of their website & introducing a completely overhauled mobile app, Voyager, LinkedIn has set themselves up to connect the youngest professionals to a community of seasoned LinkedIn networking veterans.

Two years ago, I decided to make a significant change in the way I valued myself and the way I wanted others to value me. I realized that the implications of an unpaid internship are not uniform across the industry (though they should be), and that some of the biggest names severely abuse the position. While some studios may not even realize they’re in the wrong, I’m sure there are some that choose to turn a blind eye when it keeps their bottom line looking good.

 I will preface this article by saying that it is not intended to hurt or demean any business or individuals. It is merely a record of my experience in a truly dissatisfying internship experience, and how I chose to address that situation. Names have been changed to protect the identities of the employees, interns & businesses.
